Patient of the Month: Mayra

December 01, 2019 – Close your eyes and picture a fun-loving toddler learning a new language, singing songs, and exploring her environment – eager to learn about the world around her and everything it has to offer. That’s Mayra, a two-year-old girl who was born with a very rare case of cloacal malformation, a developmental disorder that affects nearly one in every 50,000 babies. Mayra’s life was at risk due to impending renal failure and time was running out.

Comprehensive Care for Pediatric Colorectal Conditions

November 07, 2024 – When Nicklaus Children's Hospital clinicians and administrators surveyed the statewide pediatric medical landscape in 2017, they identified a gap in colorectal care. Specialists were available, but they weren't consolidated within a comprehensive program. In response, they gathered their human and technological resources and developed the Colorectal Center at Nicklaus Children's. The program launched in 2018 and has become a referral center within Florida and beyond, with many patients traveling from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Colorectal Center goes on mission trip to Peru

April 11, 2019 – Juan Calisto, MD, and Raquel Pasarón, APRN, from the Nicklaus Children’s Colorectal Center care team recently participated in a mission trip to Peru to deliver collaborative care to 19 children affected by complex colorectal conditions, as well as provide education and onsite training of local pediatric surgeons. Nicklaus Children’s was one of only four organizations invited to participate in the program, which was sponsored by Red De Corazones and the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño in Lima, Peru.
